Manufacturers therefore build to order, cutting fabric only once a specific order exists. The clock starts at the factory rather than at a warehouse shelf.
Production is also batched by frame and fabric to use materials efficiently, so an order may wait for enough similar orders to accumulate before it enters the line.
Ocean freight adds fixed, unpredictable weeks
A large share of furniture sold in the US is manufactured overseas, and sea transit adds a substantial and only roughly predictable period to every order.
Port congestion, container availability and customs processing each introduce variability that the retailer cannot compress, and none of it is visible at the point of sale.
Retailers absorb this by quoting a range that covers a normal and a delayed outcome, because a single date would be wrong more often than right.
Bulk goods move through a different network
Parcel carriers handle boxes within defined size and weight limits. Furniture exceeds them, so it moves through freight networks that consolidate loads regionally.
Those networks run on scheduled routes rather than continuous flow, which means an item may wait at a hub for the next departure serving its region.
A final-mile furniture terminal then holds the item until it can be scheduled onto a local delivery route with the right crew and vehicle.
Final delivery requires a crew and an appointment
Delivery into a home usually needs two people, a truck with a lift gate, and often assembly, packaging removal and placement in a specific room.
Those routes are planned days ahead and are constrained by crew availability, which is why the delivery window narrows to a specific day only near the end.
Any failed delivery, from an access problem to an absent customer, returns the item to the terminal and pushes it to a later route rather than a next-day retry.
Damage inspection extends the tail
Large items are inspected before and often during delivery, and goods damaged in transit are returned rather than delivered.
A replacement generally re-enters the process at the manufacturing stage if the item is made to order, which restarts much of the original wait.
Retailers price this risk into their quoted windows, so a stated range reflects not only the normal path but the probability that some portion of orders will take it twice.
