Support periods are the real product lifetime

A device that depends on a service stops being fully functional when updates end, regardless of the condition of its components.

Manufacturers increasingly publish a minimum support period, and that figure is more informative about useful life than build quality for anything network-connected.

Where no period is stated, the practical answer is usually tied to how long the model stays commercially relevant rather than to how long it physically lasts.

Update control is uneven across categories

Some products let owners defer or decline updates, others apply them automatically, and a growing number require an update before initial setup will complete.

Mandatory updates make sense for security, since an unpatched connected device is a risk beyond its owner, but they also remove the option of keeping a version that worked well.

Rolling back is rarely supported, and manufacturers usually block downgrades to prevent reintroducing a vulnerability, so an unwanted change is generally permanent.

What this changes about buying

Specifications describe a device at a moment, while the software governing them remains under the manufacturer's control for as long as the product is supported.

That makes the manufacturer's update record a meaningful part of what is being purchased, particularly for products expected to last many years.

It also means comparisons drawn from launch-period testing describe an earlier version of the product than the one a buyer will own six months later.
