Furniture at similar prices varies enormously in how long it lasts, and the differences are visible if you know what to look at.
The materials, distinguished
The first thing to establish and frequently obscured by terminology.
Solid wood, which can be repaired, refinished and lasts indefinitely.
Plywood, which is layered and is genuinely strong, particularly for structural components.
Particle board and fibreboard, which are engineered from wood particles and resin, are stable and flat, and swell irreversibly when wet and do not hold screws well after disassembly.
And veneer, which is a thin layer of real wood over a substrate, and which is not a defect — it is how most fine furniture has been made for centuries — but which cannot be sanded and refinished.
Terms like solid wood construction and wood-based panel are used loosely, and the specification generally states the actual materials if you look.
Joinery
The most reliable single indicator.
Traditional joints — dovetails, mortise and tenon — indicate a construction method that holds under stress and can be repaired.
Dowels and screws with glue are the ordinary standard and are adequate.
Staples, plastic connectors and cam locks are the cheapest and are the ones that loosen and cannot be tightened permanently.
Drawers are the easiest place to check. Pull one out and look at the corners.
What is inside upholstery
Where most of the cost difference sits and none of it is visible.
The frame material and construction, which determines whether the piece survives a decade. Kiln-dried hardwood is the standard for durable frames; softwood and engineered panels are cheaper and less durable.
The suspension, where webbing, serpentine springs and eight-way hand-tied springs represent ascending cost and durability.
And the cushion filling, where foam density determines how long it holds shape. Density is specified by manufacturers who use good foam and omitted by those who do not.
Which means the absence of a specification is itself informative in this category.
The weight test
Crude and surprisingly reliable.
Solid wood and dense engineered panels are heavy. Hollow construction and low-density boards are light.
A piece that is noticeably light for its size is generally hollow or made from low-density material.
This is not universal, since some good design is deliberately light, and it is a useful first signal.
Finish and edges
Details that reveal the production standard.
Edge banding on panel furniture, which should be firmly applied and consistent. Lifting or thin banding indicates a low specification and is where damage begins.
Finish consistency on undersides and backs, which cheap furniture leaves unfinished and which affects moisture stability.
And whether the back panel is a solid piece fixed properly or a thin sheet stapled on, which affects structural rigidity considerably.
The hardware
Small components with a large effect on lifespan.
Drawer runners, where metal ball-bearing runners are substantially better than plastic and are visible.
Hinges, where adjustable metal hinges are standard on decent cabinetry.
And fixings, where metal inserts are considerably better than screws directly into particle board, which strip on the second assembly.
The flat-pack consideration
Which is not a quality judgement in itself.
Flat-pack construction spans a wide quality range, and some is genuinely durable.
What it does mean is that the piece is designed to be assembled once. Repeated disassembly and reassembly degrades the fixings, particularly in engineered panels.
Which matters if you move frequently, and it is worth weighting toward assembled furniture or toward flat-pack with metal inserts if so.
What to prioritise
Given a fixed budget.
Spend on the things that take load and daily use — seating frames, dining chairs, bed frames, drawer units.
Economise on things that sit still and hold light objects — shelving, side tables, decorative pieces.
Buy second-hand for solid wood, which is abundant, cheap and outlasts anything new at the same price.
And check the joints on any drawer before buying anything, which takes five seconds and tells you most of what you need to know.
Buying second-hand
Where the quality signals are most useful.
Older furniture was frequently made with solid timber and traditional joinery, and it is abundant and inexpensive because it is unfashionable and heavy.
What to check is structural integrity, since loose joints on solid wood can be re-glued and damaged particle board cannot.
Woodworm and rot are the disqualifying faults, and both are identifiable on inspection.
And upholstered second-hand furniture requires more caution, since the interior condition is invisible and fire safety labelling requirements differ by jurisdiction.
Assembly as a durability factor
Worth stating since it affects how long a piece lasts more than most buyers expect.
Fixings tightened properly and squarely at assembly, and re-tightened after a few months as things settle, prevent the progressive loosening that destroys flat-pack furniture.
Assembling on a flat surface matters, since a frame assembled out of square is under permanent stress.
And keeping the spare fixings and the instructions makes later repair possible, which is the difference between a wobble being fixed and a piece being discarded.
