The composition label is the only part of a garment that describes it in objective terms. Fibre content predicts more about how a piece will wear than price or brand does.
What each fibre family contributes
Natural fibres such as cotton, linen and wool are absorbent and breathable, which is why they feel comfortable against skin in a wide range of conditions.
Synthetics including polyester and nylon are strong, hold their shape, dry quickly and resist creasing, but they trap moisture and hold odour more readily.
Regenerated fibres like viscose and lyocell are made from processed cellulose and sit between the two, offering drape and softness with lower durability.
Why blends exist
Blending combines properties that no single fibre provides, such as the handle of cotton with the shape retention and reduced creasing of a synthetic.
Small proportions of elastane add stretch and recovery, which is why fitted garments hold their shape rather than bagging at the knees and elbows.
Blends also reduce cost, since synthetic fibres are generally cheaper than good natural ones, and the proportions on the label indicate which motive dominated.
What composition says about longevity
Fibre length and yarn quality matter as much as the fibre itself, which is why two garments with identical labels can wear entirely differently.
Long-staple cotton produces smoother, stronger yarn that resists pilling, while short fibres work loose from the surface and form the bobbles that ruin knitwear.
These distinctions are rarely stated, so weight, density of knit or weave, and how the fabric recovers when stretched by hand are the available proxies.
Care requirements follow from the fibre
Wool felts when agitated in hot water because its surface scales interlock, which is the mechanism behind a jumper shrinking irreversibly.
Viscose loses strength when wet and can shrink or distort in washing, which is why many garments containing it carry restrictive care instructions.
Care labels are the manufacturer's conservative instruction rather than a physical limit, but ignoring them shifts the risk entirely onto the owner.
Reading the label alongside the price
A high price does not guarantee a good composition, and expensive garments made largely of cheap synthetics are common in fashion-led ranges.
The useful comparison is composition and construction at a given price, since those determine whether the garment survives repeated wear and washing.
Seam finishing, fabric weight and the presence of matched patterns at the seams are the construction signals that separate similar labels.
